How to Move a Column in Excel – Drag or Cut Insert

Drag to move (fastest)

How to move a column in excel (same for how to move columns in excel):

  1. Click the column letter to select the whole column.
  2. Move the pointer to the edge of the selection until it becomes a four-headed arrow.
  3. Hold Shift, then drag to the new position (a vertical insert line appears).
  4. Release—the column shifts without overwriting.

Without Shift, Excel may overwrite the destination. Shift+drag inserts and shifts other columns.

Cut and insert

  1. Select the column → Ctrl+X.
  2. Select the destination column header (where the cut column should sit).
  3. Right-click → Insert Cut Cells.

Do not use plain Paste if you need neighboring columns to shift.

Inside an Excel Table

Right-click a table column → cut/insert carefully, or drag the column header inside the table. Structured tables keep formulas tied to column names.

Reorder without desktop Excel

Upload and keep only the columns you want in a new order with Extract columns. Join fields instead of moving with Column merge.
